Flugt Museum

- past and present

At FLUGT Museum you get up close to some of history's most human stories. Located in the former buildings of the refugee camp hospital in Oksbøl, the original red brick buildings with small paned windows still stand as a powerful testament to the past.

The historic buildings are today connected by a modern and curved extension designed by Bjarke Ingels Group. The award-winning architecture connects past and present, creating a special atmosphere where history, architecture and human stories meet.

The museum provides a powerful insight into what it means to be a refugee - both historically and in today's world.

The story of the refugee camp in Oksbøl

After World War II, around 250,000 refugees streamed across the border into Denmark. In Oksbøl, one of Europe's largest refugee camps arose, where up to 35,000 people lived for a period.

At the museum you can experience exhibitions that tell the story of life in the camp, the people who lived there, and the personal destinies behind the historical events.

The permanent exhibitions include:

  • Refugees at all times - an exhibition focusing on refugee stories over the last 100 years.

  • Refugee camp Oksbøl - stories and artefacts from life in the camp after the war.

  • Refugee cemetery - a powerful historical memorial from the post-war period.

  • Sound walk in the former refugee camp - a guided experience through the area where history is told through personal stories.

The museum is constantly working on new special exhibitions, so there are often new perspectives to experience during a visit.
